1994 marked a historic moment in the USA for the Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel. The American Kennel Club announced its intention
to recognize Cavaliers as the 139th breed eligible to be shown
at AKC shows. The American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was
formed to be recognized by AKC as the parent club. This group was
determined to protect the breed and the standard of the breed recognized
around the world. The standard approved by the American Club was
accepted that year by AKC.
1995 AKC opened its registration of the Cavalier King Charles
Spaniel. Those Cavaliers became the foundation stock of our breed
today. The American club began to work toward a series of matches
to gain its Licensed club status and hold its own breed show. These
matches were also intended to educate Judges for our Breed when
we became eligible to show at AKC events.
Members in our area of the newly formed American Club were contacted
to put on a match for the National club. We contacted the Seattle
Kennel Club and received permission to hold the first Fun Match
for National at their February show. A small group of 11 American
Club members met in January to plan this event. At that meeting
we decided to form a Regional AKC club for the breed. Our first
match drew over 30 entries and was well attended by AKC Judges
and the public. We were on our way.
We met monthly and selected the club name Cavalier King Charles
Spaniel Club of Puget Sound. During this time we drew up the By-laws
and Constitution and selected our first officers and directors.
We received approval from AKC to proceed with a series of matches
to work toward our Sanctioned and Licensed club status. Several
people expressed an interest in joining the local club so a membership
application was drawn up and approved. By the end of the year our
membership had grown to 22.
We held our first Fun Match for the Cavaliers of Puget Sound Club
in July. We invited members of the Washington State Judges Association
to attend a seminar on the breed and the match. It was from this
group that our future Match judges were selected.
1996
marked the first year Cavaliers were shown at all AKC events.
The Puyallup shows in January were the first for us in this area.
The entry of Cavaliers for Breed was one of the largest in the
country. The first day a Cavalier went Group 3 followed the next
day by another taking the Group. Some of the first AKC Champions
came from our area. We celebrated our first Anniversary that month.
1997 we gained our Sanctioned match status and began holding
B matches. The following year we were approved for A matches and
were well on our way for Licensed club status. Our membership was
continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. We held Christmas parties,
Fun Days, educational seminars and started participating in the
Seattle Kennel Club show with our meet the breed booth.
2000
we were the first AKC Licensed Regional Cavalier breed club in
the country. We began preparation to hold our first pointed
show. We were approved to hold our show in conjunction with the
Gig Harbor Shows in September. At that first show we had an entry
of over 90 dogs and drew some of the top Cavaliers in the country.
It was a huge success! Our membership was now over 100 and was
still growing.
2004 we hosted the first back to back National Specialty and Regional
Specialty shows. It was the first National to be held outside of
Pennsylvania. Our club members worked hard to make this show the
best ever and their efforts paid off. We had the largest entry
of Cavaliers in the history of the breed in America. Our show set
the bar for all National shows to follow.
2005
marked the 10th Anniversary of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Club of Puget Sound.
In
2006 we held our seventh annual AKC Specialty Show. We were back
with the Gig Harbor Club show
in
September at Shelton.
We
are looking forward to the next 10 years and to the future. Our
membership is what has always contributed to the success
of our club and without them we would never be where we are
today. We wish to extend a welcome to all exhibitors that will
be attending
shows this year. Thank you for helping us celebrate over 11
years as a club!
